Auxiliary Axis Contactor (Emergency Stop Output)
Figure 4-10: Auxiliary Axis Contactor and Monitoring (CN3 - FIO04 Connections)
The auxiliary axis or emergency stop contactor is driven by a safety output on the PCSS unit,
(as shown in
requirements of the press brake. This ensures that should an emergency stop condition occur,
any associated press brake operation is disabled and that any control or movement of the
pressing beam is prevented.
When the PCSS is initially powered up and providing certain conditions are met for normal
operation, this output is can be switched on by pressing the error reset switch connected to the
PCSS, allowing all operational circuits for the press brake to be enabled. In the event that an
emergency stop condition arises, the auxiliary axis or emergency stop contactor is switched off
by the safety output on the PCSS. The emergency stop condition must then be resolved and
the error reset switch pressed to activate the safety output for the auxiliary axis or emergency
stop contactor.
When connecting the emergency stop or auxiliary axis contactor to the Y07 output of CN3 it is
also important to install a diode in reverse polarity across the coil as shown in
This prevents the contactor from de-energising during the hardware checks that are performed
on this output after the completion of a bend cycle due to the increased release time of the
contactor provided by the diode. The rating of the diode installed should be sufficient to handle
the supply current for the contactor.
A normally closed (NC) contact from this contactor is also required to be connected to the
safety input of the PCSS, as shown in
changeover of this contactor occurs correctly. When an emergency stop condition happens,
monitoring of the contactor is essential in confirming that the contact changeover occurs within
an acceptable time limit to ensure that press brake operation is disabled.
