1. Press the VCR or LDP POWER button to
turn on VCR or laserdisc player.
2 Set the AUDIO/VIDEO selector to
VIDEO.
3 Set the component selector to the
appropriate component.

Press the operation button that
corresponds to the operation you want
to perform (i.e., press B
to start
playing a videocassette or laserdisc).
Setting the command code (VTR 1, 2, or 3)
The command codes for both VCR A and B
'are factory set to Beta (VTR 1). Complete
the following steps if you want to change
the command cade.

Set the
AUDIO/ VIDEO
selector to
VIDEO.

Set the component selector switch to
either VCR A or B.

Press VCR POWER and one of the
number buttons (1, 2, or 3) at the same
time.
The command code is set as follows:
* VCR +1 = Beta VCR (VTR 1) ~
* VCR + 2 = 8mm VCR (VTR 2)
¢ VCR + 3 = VHS VCR (VTR 3)
To take advantage of the two component
selector VCR settings (A and B), be sure to
select a different command code for both A
and B.

Connecting Optional
Equipment
For greater enjoyment of your stereo
system, you can connect other components
to the stereo. You can connect:
¢ an additional VCR (playback only) to the
AUX IN jacks.
ean MD deck to the MD jacks
¢ headphones to the PHONES jack on the
front of the unit.
¢ The AC power cord (mains lead) of a
component connected to this unit to the
UNSWITCHED AC OUTLET (USA and
Canadian models only).

To connect a VCR

Connect the audio out of the VCR, or
other video equipment to the AUX IN
jacks on the back of this unit.

Press AUX and "AUX" appears in the
display.
The sound from the VCR comes through
the speakers.
You can also record the sound from the
VCR.
To connect an MD deck

MD deck
1 Connect the OUT jacks on the MD deck
to the MD IN jacks on the rear of this
unit.

2 Connect the IN jacks on the MD deck to
the MD OUT jacks on the rear of this
unit.

Press MD and "MD" appears in the
display.
The sound from the MD comes through
the speakers.
You can record to and from the MD
deck.
To use the MD deck to record an
audio source
Select the source you want to record by
pressing the respective function button on
the front of this unit (i.e., press CD if you
want to record a CD)
Set the MD deck to record (refer to the
instructions supplied with your MD deck if
you need help).
Start recording on the MD deck (refer to the
instructions supplied with your MD deck if
you need help).
Start playing back the source you want to
record (i.e., press the CD B button on the
front of this unit).
To use the UNSWITCHED AC OUTLET
(USA and Canadian models only)
Make sure that the power consumption of
the component you want to connect does
not exceed 120 watts, then plug its AC
power cord (mains lead) into the
UNSWITCHED AC OUTLET on the back of
the HCD-VA550.
Do not connect TVs, fans, or other high
voltage home appliances to this outlet.
To connect headphones
You can connect headphones to the
PHONES jack on the front panel of the
HCD-V A550.
When listening with the headphones, use
the LINE OUT/PHONES LEVEL knob to
adjust the volume level you hear through
the headphones. (The signal output
through the VARIABLE jacks on the back of
this is adjusted together with the
headphones level.)
You can also use the HCD VOL (volume)
buttons on the remote control to adjust the
LINE OUT /PHONES LEVEL.
To connect the HCD-VA550 to a
powered speaker system without
volume control

Connect the VARIABLE OUT jacks on the
back of this unit to the IN jacks on the
powered speaker.
Use the LINE OUT/PHONES LEVEL knob
to adjust the volume level you hear through
the speakers.
You can also use the HCD VOL (volume)
buttons on the remote control to adjust the
LINE OUT/PHONES LEVEL.
