Battery operation time
The unit can operate continuously for about four hours on six R6 (size AA) alkaline
batteries and two hours when using the display's backlight. When the position
update rate is set to Interval in the Position Setting menu, the unit can operate for
about ten hours on alkaline batteries (see page 72).
Replacing batteries
When the batteries are discharged, the symbol "€\)" (battery warning display) and
the message "Warning! Battery low" appear in the display. When these appear,
have new alkaline batteries ready for replacement. If the batteries are completely
discharged, the message "Battery empty! Turn off power and replace battery"
appears, and the unit automatically powers off in about 20 seconds. Only the
ENTER key works before the unit powers off. Therefore, press the ENTER key
when this message appears.
Extending the battery life
Certain functions, such as backlighting and beeps, cause the batteries to discharge
faster. To extend the battery life, keep the use of these functions to a minimum.
About the lithium batteries
The unit has two built-in lithium batteries. One battery supplies power for memory,
which stores navigation points and routes. The other battery supplies power for the
antenna, which stores the satellite information. These lithium batteries last about
five years. When they are discharged, the message "Internal lithium battery low"
appears. In this case, have the batteries replaced by a Sony dealer or any Sony
Service Center.
Using other power sources
You can also power the unit using the following optional accessories:
« Rechargeable battery pack (not supplied)
* Car battery, using an optional Sony adaptor
For details on these power sources, see "Using Optional Accessories" on page 79.
Note:
In low ambient temperatures, batteries
discharge faster.
Note:
Use alkaline batteries: non-alkaline
batteries will not last as long.
Note:
Sometimes, using one of these functions
may cause a temporary drop in voltage and
the message "Warning! Battery low" may be
displayed. However, the voltage is probably
sufficient for normal operation.
Note:
When you have the lithium batteries
replaced, the unit will take about 20 minutes
(or more than one hour depending on the
reception condition) to acquire the current
position in order to receive the orbital
information for al! satellites.
