7. Commissioning

Before the hoist is used for the first time, it must be
subjected to an inspection by a competent person for
hoists in accordance with BetrSichV. This testing con
sists primarily of a visual examination and a functional
check. It is intended to ensure that the equipment is in
a safe condition, and that any faults or damages are
found and rectified.
Whenever work begins, the equipment, including the
means of support, fittings and structure, must first be
examined for any obvious faults. The brakes, and cor
rect suspension of the device and of the load, must also
be checked. This is to be done by using the equipment
to raise a load through a short distance, to pull or to
apply tension, and then to lower or release once more.
The lowering movement must be particularly observed
during this test!
Checking the type plate
The type plate must be present and must be readable.
Checking the load chain
The load chain must be checked to see that it is ade
quately lubricated, and that there are no external faults,
deformations, cracks, abrasion, stretching or corrosion
blisters.
Checking the end-piece of the chain
It is essential that the chain's endpiece is fitted to the
free end of the chain.
Checking the support and load hooks
The support and load hooks must be checked to see
that there are no deformations, damage, cracks, exces
sive wear or corrosion blisters. The hook safety shack
les must be present.
Checking chain threading
When the handwheel is turned clockwise, the load
hook must move in the direction of the housing, that is
towards the device. The chain must be free to move
cleanly into the equipment.
Only use the device – and auxiliary equipment – that is
free from faults. If faults are found, operation of the
equipment must cease. Inspection and repair may only
be carried out competently by a competent person.
• It is essential to check that the lever hoist corres
ponds exactly to what was ordered and that the
prescribed marking is present.
• the mandatory identification is present.
• It is essential to check that this manual on the correct
use of lever hoists is available and has been read and
understood by the user.
• Operating forces according to the specifications must
not be exceeded.
• The operative must only initiate movement of the load
after he has first convinced himself that the load is
properly attached and that there is nobody in the
hazardous area.
• If an overload is detected, work must cease
immediately and the lever hoist must be checked
by a specialist.
• It must be ensured that the load is located in the bed
of the hook and that the safety flap is engaged. If the
safety flap snaps past the hook tip, the hook has been
overloaded and needs to be replaced.
• The hook must swivel easily and smoothly prior to
use.
• The lever hoist must be suspended properly on the
support element.
• The chain must be tautened slowly when raising a load.
A suspended load must not be made to swing.
• The chain must be cleaned and lubricated if it jams,
jumps or causes overly loud noises. If the problem
persists, the lever hoist must be taken out of service
immediately and checked by a qualified person.
The following information should support users in the
preparation and execution of lifting procedures. They
are by no means exhaustive and do not supersede the
training for riggers. In this regard, it's also referred to
ISO 124801, DGUV Information for riggers 209013,
BetrSV and further applicable regulations (while re
specting the respective market of the country).
Before putting the lever hoist into operation, it must be
checked thoroughly for possible damage during transport.
The complete device should be checked to be sure that
there are no visible defects.
