Module Descriptions

Module Descriptions
The following sections describe each module in the GX 550 ES extender.

Uplink Module

Through a Utopia II interface, the uplink module controls the ATM cell format and
processing to and from the transport modules in the GX 550 ES extender. The uplink
module controls the transmission of cells to and from the GX 550 Multiservice WAN
switch via a standard multimode fiber cable.
For each uplink module installed, a supporting uplink phy module must be installed in
the matching slot at the rear of the extender.

Number of Supported Modules

Up to four uplink modules can populate a GX 550 ES chassis — two in each
subsection. Each uplink module can support up to three active DS3 ATM/CE transport
modules and one redundant DS3 ATM/CE transport module.
The uplink modules can be installed in slots 1A and 2A and/or 1B and 2B at the front
of the extender (see

Redundancy Capabilities

Uplink modules are capable of 1+1 redundancy within a subsection. If an active
uplink module or uplink phy module fails, the redundant uplink/uplink phy module
pair becomes active, providing switchover with SONET equivalent protection (under
50 ms). Data traffic is then handled by the redundant uplink/uplink phy module pair.
