6.5.18. Phaser

Fire phasers, Mr. Worf! Phase shifting splits the incoming signal, changes the phase of one
side, and recombines it with the unaffected signal. Modulation of this signal via an LFO
results in a notch-comb filter that sweeps through the frequency spectrum, causing that
familiar "whooshing" sound. Some phaser pedals have just two or three knobs; the one in
Acid V offers a lot of fine-grained control.
♪ Two iconic uses of the phaser are on analog strings by Gary Wright and Jean Michel Jarre, and on
electric piano by Steely Dan.
Control
Description
Waveform
Sets the waveform for the internal LFO
Rate
Adjusts the rate of the phaser, with unsynced and tempo-synced options
Feedback (V)
Controls the amount of phased signal feeding back into the effect for a more resonant sound
Amount
Determines the depth of modulation by the LFO
Frequency
Sets the harmonic center for the modulation effect
(H)
N Poles
Determines the steepness of the phaser's filter frequency response
Stereo
Gradually changes the phaser from mono to stereo output
