6-11 Replacing System Fans

System fans provide cooling for the system and circulate air through the node as
a means of lowering the internal temperature. The F424BD system fans are easily
removed from the fan tray. There is no need to uninstall any other parts when
replacing fans, and only a Phillips screwdriver is required for installation.
Note: The fans in this system are redundant and hot-plug.
Removing a Rear Exhaust Fan
1. Determine which motherboard node contains the failed fan and power down
the node with the operating system.
2. Power down the system and remove the power cord from the rear of the
power supply as described in Section 6-3.
3. Press the release tab on the bottom of the fan and pull it away from rear of
the node.
Installing a Rear Exhaust Fan
1. Press the release tab on the bottom of the fan and insert it into the open fan
bay.
2. Push the fan into the bay until it clicks into the locked position.
