HP Kayak XA-s
This guide is for experienced technicians who have already
completed the training course on the HP Kayak PC
Workstation family. In particular, it assumes that the reader
is already familiar with the HP Kayak XA-s Minitower, XU
and XW PC Workstations, which share many features with
the HP Kayak XA-s Desktop PC Workstation.
This document serves as a self-paced familiarization guide
to the new desktop package, designed to train you for repair
of the computer, and only contains repair-specific
information. For information on the installation of
accessories, see the User's Guide and the online documents
that are supplied with the computer.

  • Page 3 HP Kayak XA-s Desktop PC Workstation Overview Component Microprocessor 266, 300, 333, 350 or 400 MHz Pentium II processor with 512 KB cache memory and higher frequencies when available. Three DIMM sockets upgradeable using: Main Memory 256 MB Registered ECC SDRAM to a maximum of 768 MB, or 64 MB or 128 MB unbuffered ECC SDRAM, or 32 MB, 64 MB or 128 MB non-ECC to a maximum of 384 MB.

  • Page 5 Dismantling and Reassembling the Desktop Package Below is a flowchart showing the steps to follow to service the desktop package. Each step shows how to remove and reinstall a component. Follow Flowchart downwards for order in dismantling the desktop package.

Lift up the side latches to unlock the front panel. Slide the cover as far as possible towards the front of the computer (past the FDD eject tab).

Pull the airflow guide up and then diagonally out towards the front of the chassis. To Reinstall: Be sure to fit tabs so that they snap back into the recesses shown above. Access to the floppy hard disk drive and the CD-ROM drive is now possible NOTE (see “Step 5: Removing/Installing the CD-ROM and FDD”...
  • Page 8 Step 5: Removing/Installing the CD-ROM and FDD When reconnecting, ensure that cables are routed through the cable guide WARNING: as shown, to prevent them from coming into contact with components that become hot during service. Unplug the floppy disk drive cable from the system board (situated below the power supply as shown).
  • Page 9 Step 6: Removing/Reinstalling the Lower Airflow Guide + Fan Assembly Ensure that the floppy and IDE cables have been removed from the cable clip on the assembly. Disconnect the fan from the connector near the right-hand edge of the system board. Step 7: Adding a Second Processor Remove the processor terminator in the second slot.

Reinstalling Processors: Push the processor down into the slot until you hear an audible click (on both sides).

If a second processor is installed, a second VRM must also be installed (one VRM per processor). Step 11: Removing/Reinstalling the HDD Cage Remove the four screws at each corner of the HDD cage.

    Step 12: Installing an HDD Remove the four screws at the top center of the HDD cage (these are spares for a second hard disk drive). Step 13: Adding/Replacing DIMMs To remove the original DIMM (slot A), release retaining clips and pull the DIMM up and out of the memory slot.
