Real-Time Clock Battery
The NEATsx has an onboard nickel cadmium battery (nicad)
that maintains the system configuration information in the CMOS
RAM. The battery automatically recharges while the power is on. It
can be circumvented by using a battery pack of four "AA" batteries or
a battery especially designed for this purpose, either of which are pur
chased separately.
Since the onboard battery recharges when your system is in
use, the main reason you may want to supplement it is if you know
that the system will not be in use for a month or more. If this will be
the case, the onboard battery will discharge, resulting in the loss of
your system configuration. If you attach an auxiliary battery during
this period, the information will be retained. You will, however, need
to leave the system on for six to twelve hours to recharge the onboard
battery the first time the system is turned on again.
The external pack or battery will have wire leads to connect it
to the battery connector on the board. Instructions on how to connect
the battery pack to the board are given in the next section. See the
Software section if a batteiy-related problem arises with the CMOS
RAM configuration information.
