Formula for determining the minimum subject
illumination for different F value
The amount of light passed through a lens is expressed by a value
called "aperture value" (F value or F number). When the aperture is
fully open (maximum aperture), the maximum amount of light is
passed through the lens. This is the lens' brightness and is
expressed by the "maximum aperture F value". The maximum
aperture F value is obtained by dividing the focal length with the lens
diameter (D). The capital letter "F" is used to distinguish it from "f",
which means the focal length.
