OSCILLATOR 1 has controls for:
Waveform selects the output wave. The choices are triangle , sawtooth , variable-
width pulse , and white noise .
PW (Pulse Width) varies the width of the pulse wave, from 50% (Square) to
0.00% (silence). Unlike the original hardware, KORG MS-20 V offers Pulse Width
Modulation (PWM).
PW and PWM also affect the triangle wave in a subtle way, providing a gentle timbral change that
is a lot more subtle than what you hear on the pulse wave. Try it!
Scale defines the base octave/pitch of the VCO, (32', 16', 8', 4')
Why are these numbers given in feet? Octave settings are measured in feet because they
originated with organ pipes, whose pitch would drop by an octave if the pipe length was doubled. Many
synthesizers today use feet for octave designations – 64', 32', 16', 8', 4', and 2' – although this parameter
might be called Scale, Octave, Range, etc.
OSCILLATOR 2 has controls for:
Waveform selects the output wave. The choices are sawtooth , square , narrow
pulse , and ring modulation .
Ring modulation is a common form of sound generation, where the two oscillators are input to a
circuit that includes four diodes in a ring (hence the name). The output frequencies are the sum and
difference of the input frequencies, which don't follow the pitch and harmonic structure of the inputs.
While you can use the Patch Panel to create wide variations with clanging metallic tones, varying the
Pitch of VCO 2 will produce dramatic pulsating sounds that remain in tune.
Pitch sets the interval by which VCO 2's pitch differs from VCO 1's (-13.0 to +13.0
semitones). Note that the knob has much finer control when Pitch is near 0, so
slight detuning can be very carefully adjusted. Double-click the knob to reset to
0.00 semitones.
Scale defines the base octave/pitch of the VCO. (16', 8', 4', 2') This is the same
range as VCO 1, but an octave higher.
There are two switches that add new VCO features:
VCO 1 > VCO 2 Sync forces VCO 1 to restart its waveform cycle every time VCO 2 does. This
creates unusual waveforms with unique combinations of harmonics. Slight modulation of
VCO 2's frequency causes dramatically sweeping timbral changes.
Unison activates the Unison function, which plays multiple voices with each keypress in
Mono Legato or Mono Retrig modes.
