5.6 Measurement Limitations

If you d oubt the S pO 2 measurements, check the person's vital s i g n s
fi rst. Then check the pulse oximeter and S p O2 sen sor. The fol l owi n g
factors may i n fluence the accuracy o f measurements:
• Ambient light
• Physical movement (person or imposed motion)
• Diagnostic testing
• Low perfusion
• Electromagnetic interference, such as MRI environment
• Electrosurgical units
• Dysfunctional haemoglobin, such as carboxyhemoglobin (COHb) and
methemoglobin (MetHb)
• Presence of certain dyes, such as methylene and indigo carmine
• Inappropriate positioning of the SpO2 sensor, or use of incorrect SpO2
• Drop of arterial blood flow to unmeaurable level due to shock, anemia, low
temperature or vasoconstrictor.
