11. Indicazioni per la manipolazione
degli apparecchi con SF6
L'SF6 allo stato puro è un gas inodore e incolore, non tossico
con densità circa sei volte più elevata dell'aria.
Per questo motivo pur essendo privo di effetti fisiologici speci-
fici può provocare in ambienti saturi di SF6 gli effetti propri della
carenza di ossigeno.
Durante la fase di interruzione dell'interruttore si crea all'inter-
no dei poli un arco elettrico che tende a decomporre il gas SF6,
i prodotti di decomposizione rimangono ovviamente all'interno
dei poli e vengono assorbiti da apposite sostanze che fungono
da setacci molecolari.
Le probabilità di contatto con SF6 decomposto sono pratica-
mente nulle (poli sigillati a vita). La presenza nell'ambiente è
comunque immediatamente precettibile anche in modeste
quantità (1-3 ppm) per l'odore acre e sgradevole.
In tal caso l'eventuale permanenza in locali chiusi deve essere
preceduta da opportuna aereazione.

11. Indications for handling
apparatus with SF6
SF6 in its pure state is an odourless, colourless, non-toxic gas
with a density about six times higher than air.
For this reason, although it does not have any specific physi-
ological effects, it can produce the effects caused by lack of
oxygen in ambients saturated with SF6.
During the interruption phase of the circuit-breaker, an electric
arc is produced which tends to decompose the SF6 gas. The
decomposition products obviously remain inside the poles and
are absorbed by special substances which act as molecular
sieves.
The probability of contact with decomposed SF6 is practically
nil (sealed-for-life poles). Its presence in the room is, in any
case, immediately noticeable even in small quantities (1-3
ppm) because of its sour and unpleasant smell.
In this case, the room must be suitably aired before anyone
uses it.
