The functions of all these items are described in later sections of this manual.

1.3 Connecting up

The search head is connected to the main unit by a non-reversible lead.
The black plug on the cable connects to the socket on the search head. Rotate the body
of the plug (not the knurled ring) until it will slide into the socket. Push the plug fully
home, then slide the knurled ring forwards and twist it clockwise to lock the connector.
Gently pull on the body of the plug – it should not come out.
The metal plug on the cable connects to the socket on the main unit. Look at the three
pins and the polarising key, align the plug and socket, and push the plug into the socket.
Screw the knurled sleeve clockwise until it is finger tight. Gently pull on the body of the
plug – it should not come out.
To unplug either connector, turn the locking ring anticlockwise to unlock. Hold the body
of the plug – not the lead – and pull gently.
NEVER USE FORCE ON CONNECTORS OR LEADS
If the lead or connectors become damaged, contact Protovale or your national agent for
a replacement or a prompt repair. Since leads and connectors are always the most
vulnerable items in portable electronic equipment, it may be advisable to purchase a
spare lead.

1.4 Recharging batteries

When the LCD display shows LOW BATteries, accurate cover measurements cannot be
obtained until the batteries have been recharged.
To recharge the batteries, remove the main unit from its case and ensure that the ZERO
knob is turned fully anticlockwise to the OFF position. Plug the coaxial connector from
the charger module into the charger socket on the rear panel, plug the charger module
into a 220-240v AC socket, and switch on the mains at source.
Please note that it is vital that only the charger supplied with the
instrument is used. Use of any other device may destroy the batteries, and
will invalidate the warranty.
