Guided Tour of Front Panel At the left-hand end are the two on-off buttons: the green button turns the CM9 ON; and the red button turns the instrument OFF. (A second press of the ON button switches on a back-light for the display; to conserve the battery, the back-light goes out after about a quarter of an hour).
Starting up and the Menu First connect the Search Head to the Electronic Unit, using the lead supplied. Note that the end with the black plastic plug connects to the head and has a bayonet locking action; the end with the metal plug connects to the front panel and has a screw locking action.
You can now use the buttons to move the CURSOR back and forward (respectively) along the options; if you move the cursor off the end of the line, it reappears at the opposite end. If you press the button while the cursor is on one of the modes (for example), you will get information on that particular mode of operation, viz: which is typical of the meaning of the buttons in a measurement mode (as opposed to their use within the menu).
AUDIO output To turn the audio signal on, rotate the AUDIO knob away from the position clockwise towards the position to set the sound to a steady ticking when the head is away from metal. As the head is brought towards metal, the sound increases in frequency, and the indicator on the head glows brighter.
LOCATE mode This mode is intended for situations where the prime requirement is to locate all bars, or when both location and cover are required, but the audio signal cannot be used (the DEPTH mode described later will probably be preferred for general-purpose cover-measuring use —...
If you now bring the head up to a 25mm bar at 30mm distance, the display might show The signal-strength stripe at the bottom has grown (the bigger bar produces more signal), and the indicated cover (based on a ø16 bar) has therefore been under-estimated;...
Systematic Location of Rebars With head aligned horizontally, scan up and down to locate (predominantly) horizontal bars. With head aligned vertically, scan from side to side between horizontals to locate vertical bars. (optionally) with head aligned horizontally, scan up and down between verticals to confirm all horizontal bars.
Because the CM9 CoverMaster is unaffected by the nature of the material covering the reinforcing bars, the easiest way to practice location technique is to use uncovered bars which you can see. A block of wood or plastic of 20 to 45mm thickness can be held between the search head and the bars to simulate the depth of concrete cover.
Page 13
Effect of welded mesh Please note that all the location techniques described in the last few pages equally important applicable when making measurements of concrete cover or bar diameter. Please also note that the Orthogonal Sizing method must not be attempted on welded mesh fabric.
DEPTH mode This is the usual mode for surveying for depth of cover to reinforcement and can be used for bars of known or unknown diameter; it will usually be used with the audio signal turned on to assist in bar location. From the Menu, select the “Dep.”...
If you now bring the head up to a 25mm bar at 30mm distance, the display might show The larger bar has caused the indicated cover (based on a ø16 bar) to be under-estimated; but the AutoSizing estimate of the cover to a bar of unknown size is correct, and the estimated bar size is also...
Symbols used in the display of cover You will already have come across the use of the pair of equals == symbols used to indicate that the instrument has been zeroed and there are some other symbols which may be shown. These are listed below under the circumstances in which they may appear.
Accuracy of cover The displayed cover will only be correct if: (a) the head is exactly over the centre-line of the bar; (b) the head is exactly parallel to the bar; (c) the instrument has been correctly zeroed (with AutoZero, this is no problem);...
SIZE mode This mode is intended to be used to determine the diameter of a (single) bar. Whilst the associated cover will also be displayed, this mode is not intended for scanning areas, and indeed the LOCATE or DEPTH modes should have already been used to establish bar locations;...
After an acceptable pair of readings has been taken, the result is shown, for example: unless there were detectable errors in the calculation, in which case it shows To make another measurement, move the head away from all metal, and repeat the zeroing and then the display will ask for the next pair of Orth/ Para readings.
Page 20
Head-positioning: When taking the Parallel reading, the head should be getting the maximum possible signal from the bar: any mis-alignment of the head can only reduce this signal; when taking the Orthogonal reading, the head should be getting the minimum possible signal from the bar: any mis-alignment of the head– in either angle or position–...
Suggestion for orthogonal-sizing error-estimation: In situations where the nearest parallel bars appear to be adequately distant, but there is concern over the proximity of transverse bars: obviously the measurement point will be chosen to be on the bar to be sized, midway between two transverse bars;...
Optional LARGE HEAD. To fit the large head, unplug the head lead from the small head by releasing the bayonet lock, and plug into the large head. It is not necessary to switch the instrument off when exchanging heads. It is recommended that you return to the “Main Menu” and then re-enter a measuring mode;...

To activate UnderCover: hold the head away from metal and start the autoZero procedure by pressing the button, and immediately, whilst it is zeroing, press and hold the button (as a memory-jogger: the MINUS sign to set a LESS-than condition). When the display shows , release the button to get the full set- up screen...
MAXPIP mode This is not actually a separate mode, but a feature which can be activated whenever the CM9 is in either LOCATE or DEPTH modes. Its intended function is to emit a single audible “pip” over each bar when scanning. In practice, since it is not possible to be sure that you have reached maximum signal until the signal has started to decrease again, the pip always occurs just after you have passed the actual position of the bar,...
