SECTION 3
EPAC300-M50 SERIES CONTROLLER LAYOUT

3.1 Housing

The EPAC300-M50 Series housing is constructed of polycarbonate, the same
material used in traffic signal housings. This lightweight housing design provides
a rugged enclosure that is immune to dents and bending. Removable front and
rear panels allow access to all electronic circuit assemblies.
The Housing includes two adjustable mounting feet that may be screwed into
indentations in the bottom. This allows ventilation space for the lower air intake,
provides additional hand space for gripping the front connectors, and also
provides an adjustable viewing angle for the Front Panel Display.

3.2 Microprocessor

The EPAC300-M50 Series is powered by a 32-bit microprocessor installed on a
separate printed circuit board. This allows upgrade to more powerful processors
in the future by simple replacement of a single plug-in circuit board.

3.3 Carrying Handle

A carrying handle, integrated into the polycarbonate housing, allows for easy
transport with one hand.

3.4 Communications

3.4.1 NEMA Port 1 SDLC Communications
The EPAC300-M50 includes a 15-pin "D" connector compliant with the NEMA TS-2
Port 1 standard for communication to hardware devices within the cabinet,
including Bus Interface Units and Traffic Signal Monitors, among other devices.
Port 1 transmits and receives data at 153.6 Kilobits per second. Please refer to the
NEMA TS-2 specification for the detailed operation of Port 1. Refer to the Pin List
section later in this manual for connector pin functions.
3.4.2 NEMA Port 2 RS-232 Communications
The EPAC300-M50 includes a 25-pin "D" connector compliant with the EIA-232
communications standard, which serves two functions:

3.4.2.1 NEMA Port 2 Connection to Laptop, PDA or Printer

Signals are provided on this connector compliant with the NEMA TS-2 Port 2
standard, used for "hardwired" communications to nearby peripheral devices such
