Network Operation - Qualstar Q1 User Manual

Using Windows drag-and-drop operation on the desktop, you can see the time
sequence in Windows: the copy dialog will show "Calculating" while it is positioning
the tape – then the data will be transferred quickly and steadily afterwards.
For stand-alone operation we recommend using Windows Explorer to transfer files to
tape using drag-and-drop or by copy/paste operation.
We recommend you always wait for the current copy operation to complete before
initiating the next copy operation so that files do not get interspersed on tape (when
two copy operations are processed in parallel, the files are interspersed on tape and
restoring these files from tape will take much longer: tape doesn't like to spin up, read
a little, then advance, then read a little more. This is inefficient).
The best practice, if you wish to copy a number of files to tape is to select them all at
once in one operation and copy in one step.
If you wish to copy to two tapes simultaneously, use the included Qualstar DMC
software for creating efficient duplicate copies. Refer to section 3 for more information.
Reference the specific DMC software manual in the "Manuals and Utilities" folder for
more details.

1.5 Network Operation

We recommend that you first set up and test your Qualstar Q1 in Stand-alone mode
before attempting to connect to your corporate network. Once you have confirmed
proper operation of the system, you can proceed to configuring on your network.
Connect the Qualstar Q1 to your network via Gig-e. Make note of the "computer
name" (by default, this is the 1B serial# of the Q1) and the IP address.
By default we include two shared folders on the D drive of the Qualstar Q1:
• Qualstar Watch
• Qualstar Outgoing
Any computer on the network (Mac or PC) can see these folders and mount them.
On the Mac, use the Finder and select "Go..Connect to Server". Make sure that in your
Network settings you have enabled smb sharing. Enter smb://<ip address> to connect.
On the PC, you can type \\<computer name> into a Windows Explorer window (path)
to access the shared folders and/or mount as network drive.
Using the LTFS system the LTO tape drive cannot be shared with other computers on
the network directly so all copies to/from tape in a networked environment must be
done using the internal hard drive (D drive) of the Q1 as a buffer drive (unless you
wish to initiate the copy from the Q1 itself using remote desktop or from the Q1
desktop directly). This is what the Qualstar Queue software is designed to do.
To copy to the tape from a SAN, make the Q1 a SAN client and copy directly from the
SAN to the tape drive initiating the copy from the Q1 as client.
