To remove/replace the ring gear:
1.
Remove the lower discharge chute by following the
procedures described in the lower discharge chute
section of this chapter.
2.
Remove the upper engine cover by following the pro-
cedures described in Chapter 2: Engines.
3.
Remove the four screws (indicated by the arrows in
Figure 4.11.) that secure the ring gear retaining
bracket to the blower housing using a 3/8" wrench.
4.
Remove the bolt that passes through the ring gear
retaining bracket, the governor shield and the engine
block using a pair of 7/16" wrenches.
NOTE: There is a thick washer in between the ring gear
retaining bracket and the governor shield.
See Figure 4.12.
NOTE: Starting with the 2011, the 221 series will no longer
be built with this nut, bolt and washer.
5.
Lift the ring gear retaining bracket off of the snow
thrower.
NOTE: There is a detent spring under the ring gear. If the
ring gear is lifted straight up, the spring should stay
in place. See Figure 4.12. Inset.
To install the ring gear:

Apply three small dabs of white lithium grease,
equally spaced around the underside of the ring gear.
See Figure 4.13.
7.
Install the ring gear by following steps 1 - 5 in reverse
order.
NOTE: Tighten the ring gear retaining bracket screws to a
torque of 15 - 25 in lbs (1.7 - 2.8 Nm).
8.
Test run the snow thrower in a safe area before
returning it to service.
