System operation problems

If a fault occurs despite all system software and hardware running properly, the fault is likely to be due an
external equipment failure. Hardware failure can be broadly divided into two categories. The first type can be
easily resolved. The second type of hardware failure, however, cannot be resolved easily and can lead to
other complications. Software failures, on the other hand, generally result from improper modifications to the
system, such as improper additions or removals.
• If the program is run from a compact disc, replace the disc and check if the same problem exists for all
other compact discs.
• If the program is run from a hard disk drive, verify that the all files needed for the program are copied to
the same drive.
• For random faults, verify that all cables are securely connected. Ensure that the keyboard is clean, and no
keys on the keyboard are stuck (resulting in incorrect input).
• In case of a power surge, power outage or power dip, reinstall the program, then run it once more to see if
the problem persists.(Symptoms of a power dip include flickering display screens, unexpected system
reboots, and unresponsiveness to commands, etc.))For problems due to power surge signals, install a
surge suppressor between the power outlet and the server power cord.
If the problem is not resolved, contact your local Lenovo service center or sales agent.

Resolving other problems

Monitor display problems

If your monitor does not display properly, do the following:
1. Verify that the monitor's power switch is turned on.
Solution: Turn on the monitor's power switch.
2. Verify that the power cords of the server and monitor are securely and correctly connected to the power
outlets.
Solution: Plug the one end of the power cord securely into the connector at the back of the server/
monitor and the other end into a power outlet.
Note: Make sure that the power outlet used is working properly.
3. Verify that the monitor signal cable is properly connected, and there are no bent or broken pins.
Solution: Connect the monitor signal cable securely to the corresponding signal outlet on the server.
4. Verify that the system fan is running. If the system fan does not run, shut down the server immediately
and disconnect it from all power sources. Open the side panel of the server as instructed in this manual
and verify that all connections are securely fastened.

Wavy lines on the screen

If you see wavy lines running across your display screen, do the following:
1. Verify that the monitor signal cable is correctly connected to the server: plug the ends of the signal cable
securely into the adapter at the front of the server and into the corresponding connector at the rear of
the monitor.Make sure that the power outlet used is working properly.
2. Some monitors have relatively noisy displays; these monitors should be replaced.
3. If the wavy lines persist, unplug the KVM signal line from the rear.
