9. Ensure proper position and clean the electrode with
an emery cloth or steel wool.
THERMOCOUPLE
The thermocouple may need replacement if the
burner goes out after allowing the thermocouple to
heat up for an extended period of time.
1. Remove the case and emitter from the heater. See
Case and Emitter removal process.
2. Pull the thermocouple to disengage it from the pilot
bracket. See Fig. 17.

3. Lay the heater on its side and remove the base
plate cover.
4. Use a wrench and loosen the attachment nut which
is threaded into the thermocouple interrupter block.

5. Remove the thermocouple.
• Ensure the thermocouple is completely pushed into the pilot
bracket when replacing it.
• When connecting the thermocouple to the gas control valve,
thread the nut in finger tight, then snug it in with a wrench.
To determine if the thermocouple is defective:
Connect an ohm meter between the ends of the
thermocouple.
• A good thermocouple will show some level of resistance
from end to end.
• A defective thermocouple will show an open circuit on the
ohm meter.
THERMOCOUPLE INTERRUPTER
The thermocouple interrupter is a safety device that is con-
nected between the thermocouple and the safety gas control
valve. It works in conjunction with the tip switch to interrupter
the power supply to the safety gas control valve. See Fig. 18.
To remove the thermocouple interrupter:
1. Remove the heater's base plate. See Igniter removal
procedures.
2. Remove the thermocouple contact from the thermocouple
interrupter.
3. Remove the thermocouple interrupter contact from the
safety gas control valve.
