Engine oil – Sample extraction and analysis
Preconditions
• MTU Fluids and Lubricants Specifications (A001061/..) are available.
Special tools
Designation / Use
MTU test kit
Unguarded rotating and moving engine components.
Risk of serious injury – danger to life!
DANGER
Hot oil.
Oil can contain combustion residues which are harmful to health.
WARNING
Risk of injury and poisoning!
Engine noise above 85 dB (A).
Risk of damage to hearing!
WARNING
Engine oil – Sample extraction and analysis
1. With the engine running at operating temperature,
open screw on centrifugal oil filter carrier by 1
to 2 rotations.
2. Drain approx. 2 liters engine oil to flush out
the oil sludge.
3. Drain approx. 1 liter engine oil into a clean
container.
4. Close screw.
5. Using the equipment and chemicals of the MTU
test kit, examine the engine oil for:
• Dispersion capability (spot test);
• Water content;
• Dilution by fuel.

• Wear protective clothing, gloves, and goggles / safety mask.
• Avoid contact with skin.
• Do not inhale oil vapor.
• Wear ear protectors.
