Installation, Operating & Maintenance Instructions
Introduction
The Centura DBL Series actuator is a rotary valve
actuator with output torques from 2,000 to 4,000 in.-
lbs. The actuator design has been optimized for ¼
turn valve automation, designed to be used with
NEMA 4 and 4X models. Options include electronic
servo positioning cards.
Storage
For short and long term storage refer to the following
IOM: Short and long term storage conditions CE
Actuator.
Maintenance
Centura DBL Series actuators contain a
permanently lubricated, precision cut, heat treated
gear train for long, reliable cycle life. There is no
need to change gear train grease; however, should it
become necessary to refill, use Mobiltemp SHC32 or
equivalent.
The Centura DBL Series utilizes a permanent split
capacitor gear motor equipped with thermal
protection. After many operations, especially in
warm environments, the motor will heat up. To guard
the motor against overheating, the thermal protector
opens the circuit to the motor and maintains this
state until the temperature of the motor drops to a
satisfactory level. This thermal protection means that
the actuator will not move when overheated.
Consideration must be given to the duty cycle
requirements of the actuator.
Installation
1. This section of the instruction sheet applies to
the on-off units. For instructions on modulating
units, please see the ESP3 Electronic Servo
Positioner Instructions IOM.
2. Manually open and close valve to ensure
freeness of operation.
3. Be sure valve and Centura DBL Series actuator
rotate in the same direction and are in the same
position (e.g. valve closed, actuator closed). If
you are unsure, electrically operate the actuator
to determine its operating range. The electric
actuators are factory set for 90 degree
operation. Note: direction of rotation of 3-phase
motor depends on orientation of 3-phase wiring
at terminal. If motor rotation is backwards,
reverse two of the three 3-phase supply wires.

4. Mount Centura DBL Series actuator to valve
with Automax provided mounting hardware to
ensure proper alignment. Mounting hardware
should be 1-1/2 times bolt length engagement.
Do not use the manual override to align actuator
shaft to valve shaft, as this could drive the
actuator out of its operating range. (NOTE:
Some valves have manual stops; remove if
appropriate or set actuator to operate within
those travel stops.)
5. Care should be taken to align valve stem
properly with Centura DBL Series actuator
output shaft. Misalignment can cause premature
failure of assembly.
6. To connect power to terminal strip of actuator,
remove the terminal strip cover and locate the
terminal wiring schematic inside the cover.
7. Connect power to terminal strip according to
schematic diagram (power should be fused with
a 5 amp slow-blow fuse). The actuator should be
wired and grounded in accordance with Local
and National Electrical Codes.
Consult factory when wiring multiple
actuators in series or parallel. Serious
damage may result. User must isolate
8. Before replacing cover, actuate valve and check
to see if it opens and closes to preferred
positions. If valve does not perform correctly,
adjust limit switch cams and travel stops to set
actuator travel properly.
9. To set the limit switch cams and travel stops,
first adjust travel stops completely out. Next,
drive actuator to the open position. Adjust the
open switch cam to trip open switch as desired.
When the open switch is tripped, it will cut off the
motor, stopping the actuator in position.
Coarse adjustment of the "quick-set" cam is
accomplished by depressing the cam to
disengage the splines from the cam and rotating
the cam to the desired position. Releasing the
cam will allow a spring to engage the cam to the
shaft spline. Fine cam adjustments can be made
by adjusting a screw in the side of the cam to
adjust the cam profile as necessary.
After the limit switch has been set, adjust the
open travel stop. The travel stop should be
adjusted inward until the stop just touches the
Caution
unused winding.
