3-4-1 Using Floppy Disks

You can use 3.5-inch 2HD (1.44 MB) and 2DD (720
KB) floppy disks.
Handling floppy disks
Observe the following precautions when handling
floppy disks.
• Attach labels in the correct position.
• Do not write directly on a floppy disk with a pen or
pencil.
• Do not open the floppy disk shutter.
• Avoid using floppy disks in dusty locations.
• Do not place objects on top of floppy disks.
• Do not expose floppy disks to high temperatures, for
example by leaving them in direct sunlight or near
heaters.
• Protect floppy disks from cigarette smoke.
• Do not store floppy disks near water, liquids, or
chemicals.
• Keep magnets away from floppy disks.
• Do not drop floppy disks, or attach notes to them with
paper clips.
Storing floppy disks
For long-term storage of floppy disks, use a special
case designed for that purpose.
Protecting foppy disk data
• It is recommended that you make backup copies
periodically.
In particular, you should be sure to make backup
copies of the floppy disks supplied with the system.
• To protect important data stored on a floppy disk, set
the disk's write protect notch.
For details, see "Using the write protect notch" on the
next page.
Loading and ejecting floppy disks
The 3.5-inch floppy disk drive is located on the front
panel of the Digital Media Workstation.
To load a floppy disk
Proceed as follows.
1
Power the Main Unit on.
For details, see page 3-10.
2
Insert the disk into the floppy disk drive and push
it in all the way until you hear an audio click.
The floppy disk eject button comes out to a
position where you can press it.
Notes
• If you insert an unformatted floppy disk, a message
appears informing you that the disk cannot be read
and asking if you want to format it. Format the disk
as required.
Refer to the Windows 2000 documentation for more
information about formatting floppy disks.
• If you power the Main Unit on or reboot it with a
floppy disk loaded, the system will attempt to boot
from the data stored on the floppy disk. Always
power the system on and wait until Windows 2000
starts before loading a floppy disk.
