Check #2
Check for any grooves in the tension discs which prevent the discs from touching and achieving proper top
thread tension.
To replace the tension assembly use (part number QM10199).
Check #3
Ensure the take-up spring has a normal torsion tension and inspect the spring for any cuts, breaks, or
abrasions. When you move and release the take-up spring by hand, it should return to the end of the cut
out in the top tension assembly regardless of how lightly it is moved.
Adjust if necessary
Tool(s): 2 mm handle Allen
NOTE: Tension knob may be either gray or black.
1. Loosen the set screw under the top tension assembly a
couple turns as it may be fixed into an undercut into the
top tension base. (The set screw is on about a 30° angle
to the machine front cover.)
2. Remove the top tension from the machine front cover.
3. Loosen the hex screw at the rear of the top tension
base with a 2mm hex tool and rotate the split bolt until
the spring returns to the end of the slotted groove
when pushed and released.
4. Tighten the set screw firmly.
5. Replace the top tension into the machine. Ensure that
the take-up spring straight piece is straight up towards
12 o'clock in its rest position.
To replace the take-up spring
1. Remove the tension parts and split bolt.
2. Carefully work the spring around until it can be removed.
3. Replace with a new take-up spring (part number QM10197).
4. Fully insert the split bolt into the base and tighten the set screw.
5. Adjust the take-up spring tension so that it barely returns (clockwise) to the end of its slot regardless of
how lightly it is pressed counter clockwise and then released.
NOTE: Too much spring tension will affect the stitch quality, as will too little.
6. Reinstall the top tension parts on the split bolt.
7. Place the tension assembly into the machine front cover and tighten the set screw.
IMPORTANT: When the top tension assembly is properly installed, the straight part of the take-up
spring (before the loop) will be straight up at 12 o'clock (or slightly towards 11 o'clock).
