Troubleshooting

Problem
The engine does not start.
The engine runs rough.
There is white or black exhaust smoke.
The drum does not turn.
The drum does not tilt.
The drum chatters or turns erratically.
The machine vibrates excessively.
Possible Cause
1. On the engine cowl, the
engine-speed-control handle is
not all the way into the
START
2. The fuel-shutoff lever is in the
position.
3. The fuel tank is empty.
4. The fuel is bad; the engine was stored
without treating or draining the fuel, or
it was filled with bad diesel.
5. The fuel filter is clogged.
1. The air-filter is clogged.
2. There is water or contaminants in the
fuel.
3. There is too much oil in the engine.
1. The engine is overloaded.
2. The air-cleaner element is clogged.
3. Improper diesel fuel has been put in
the fuel tank.
4. The fuel-injection system has an
incorrect spray pattern.
5. There is excessive intake or exhaust
valve clearance.
6. The engine is burning oil.
1. The chain is loose or damaged.
1. The drum-tilt brake is engaged.
1. Teeth are missing from the gears.
2. The gears are misaligned.
1. There is debris in the drum.
2. The mixing paddles are damaged.

Corrective Action
1. Pull the engine-speed-control handle
to the
START
position.
2. Move the fuel-shutoff lever to the
OFF
position.
3. Fill the tank with fresh fuel.
4. Drain the fuel tank and fill it with fresh
diesel.
5. Replace the fuel filter.
1. Clean or replace the air filter.
2. Drain and fill the tank with fresh fuel.
3. Drain the oil to the proper level.
1. Reduce the load.
2. Clean the element or replace it.
3. Fill the tank with the recommended
diesel fuel.
