138 Driving and parking
Do not drive on unknown terrain that is not
R
easily visible and stay on marked routes.
Always keep the doors and windows closed
R
while the vehicle is in motion.
Deactivate Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC
R
and cruise control.
Adapt your driving style to the terrain.
R
Do not use the HOLD function on steep
R
downhill or uphill gradients with slippery or
loose surfaces.
Driving on sand
When driving on sand, also observe the following
instructions:
Shift to a lower gear.
R
Drive quickly to overcome the rolling resist‐
R
ance, otherwise the vehicle may dig itself in.
Drive in the tracks of other vehicles if possi‐
R
ble. Make sure that the following prerequi‐
sites are met:
The tire ruts are not too deep

The sand is firm enough
-
The ground clearance is sufficient
-
Lower the tire pressure in all four wheels.

Contrary to the information on the tire pres‐
sure plate (fuel filler flap), you can lower the
tire pressure to 120 kPa (1.2 bar/17.4 psi).
Mercedes-AMG vehicles: observe the notes in
the Supplement. Otherwise, you may fail to rec‐
ognize dangers.

Once you stop driving on sand, immediately
increase the tire pressure again.
You can find information on tire pressure for
the vehicle's factory-installed tires on the
following labels:

Fording
Also observe the following information when
fording:
Drive at no more than 6 mph (10 km/h).

Observe the maximum permissible fording

Before fording, shift the transfer case to the

LOW RANGE off-road gear (
Switch off automatic climate control

Ensure that a bow wave does not form as you

drive.
Do not stop in the water and do not switch

off the engine. Ensure the ECO start/stop
function is switched off (
