13.0 Troubleshooting HBS-916, HBS-1018

Symptom
Motor will not start.
Motor runs too hot.
Band Saw vibrates
excessively.
Angled cuts not
accurate.
Cuts not square.
Finished surface of
workpiece is rough,
unsatisfactory.
Possible Cause
No incoming power.
Blown electrical panel fuses or tripped
circuit breaker.
Defective motor, switch, power cable, or
plug.
Excessive blade tension.
Drive belt tension too high.
Blade too coarse for material (especially
with tubular stock).
Blade too fine for material (especially with
heavier, soft material).
Insufficient gear lubrication.
Base on uneven surface.
Saw blade has cracks.
Too heavy a cut.
Motor not tightened down.
Material not clamped properly, or vise
screws not tightened.
Blade is worn, cutting crooked.
Feed rate too fast; blade is deflecting.
Fixed vise jaw not set at 90-degrees to
blade.
Incorrect blade tooth style or spacing in
relation to workpiece.
Blade is worn, cutting crooked.
Incorrect adjustment of guide bearings.
Guide bearings are worn.
Blade guide brackets too far apart,
causing blade deflection.
Workpiece incorrectly positioned in vise,
or vise not square to blade.
Poor blade tension.
Blade tracking too far from wheel
shoulders.
Blade is dull.
Improper blade for cutting operation.
Feed rate too fast.
Blade tension too low.
Correction*
Check plug connection.
Replace fuses, or reset breaker.
Qualified electrician/service personnel
should inspect these items.
Reduce tension.
Reduce belt tension.
Use blade with finer tooth pitch.
Use blade with coarser tooth pitch.
Fill gear box above red dot in sight glass.
Adjust base for even support.
Replace blade immediately.
Reduce feed rate and blade speed.
Tighten locking handle to secure motor.
Tighten vise screws securely. Use an
adjustable square or protractor to verify
angle settings.
Replace blade.
Decrease feed rate.
Place a square against fixed jaw and
blade surface. Make adjustment if needed
and tighten screws.
Check machinist's handbook for recom-
mended blade type for work being done.
Replace blade.
Readjust guide assemblies.
Replace guide bearings.
Adjust guide assemblies as close to
workpiece as possible.
Check positioning and clamping. Check
squareness of vise jaw to blade surface.
Check and correct if needed.
Adjust blade tracking.
Replace blade.
Check machinist's handbook for blade
recommendations.
Reduce feed rate.
Increase blade tension.
