Troubleshooting, Repair, Cleaning

The user is not authorized to repair the device when it is defective. This is because the
device contains special electronic components that may only be handled by the manufac-
turer in compliance with the regulations for electrostatic sensitive devices (ESD). Further-
more, hazardous voltages can lead to lethal injuries when the work is performed improperly.
If you suspect that the device has a defect, Siemens recommends to send the entire device
back to the manufacturer. If possible, use the original transport packaging or an equivalent
packaging.
Cleaning: Switch off the device. Wiped the device with a clean, dry and soft cloth. Do not use
solvents.

Application

The communication converter (CC-XG) is a peripheral device connected to the protection
device, which allows serial data exchange between two protection devices. A communica-
tion network is used for this purpose. The digital synchronous interfaces X.21 and G.703.1
(G.703-64 kBit/s) are used as ports.
On the opposite side a second communication converter converts the data back into data
legible for the second protection device (Figure 1). This conversion allows two protection
devices to exchange data with each other. With two communication converters and one
communication network, it is therefore possible to send data from one protection device to a
second device and to receive data from there.
The connection to the protection device is made noise-proof via a fibre-optic link, by the use
of FO5 module (USART-AD-1FO or USART-AE-2FO Modul). The modules are an optical
820-nm plug-in module in the protection device, which carries out a clock recovery from the
transmitting clock of the communication network. For more details, see SIPROTEC
manual.
The data transfer between the protection devices represents a point-to-point connection and
it is bit-transparent.
The communication converter supports simple commissioning of the entire communication
path. It has a relay contact to output a "device ready" signal (Life Contact) and also has an
extended range power supply unit covering the entire normal DC and AC auxiliary voltage
range (see chapter 'Technical Data'). In addition, all important operating states are signalled
by LEDs (see chapter 'Display and operation').
