2. General instructions for use

2.1
Only use PHV 1 P phase comparators in installations they are designed for (see rating plate, e.g.
nominal voltage, nominal frequency, point of use or installation). Moreover, it must be ensured
that the same voltage level and frequency are present on all parts of the installation to be tested.
According to IEC 61481, the phase comparator can be used in the voltage range between 78 and
110% of the nominal voltage.
2.2
Clean soiled PHV 1 P phase comparators using a clean lint-free cloth (see also 9.) prior to use.
2.3
Check the PHV 1 P phase comparator for proper operation shortly before and after use.
2.4
Only contact the handle of the PHV 1 P phase comparator and operate it from a safe location to
ensure that the required safety distance from all parts of the installation that may be energised
is maintained (see also 2.5). The distance from all energised parts of the installation must be
sufficiently large to prevent danger.
2.5
When making contact by means of the test/contact electrode of the PHV 1 P phase comparator,
keep the test electrode as far away as possible from other energised or unearthed parts of the
installation. Moreover, the test/contact electrode must always be attached to metallically bare
conductors. Coats of paint may have to be penetrated by means the test electrode.
2.6
The requirements for the PHV 1 P phase comparator are based on the reduced values of the mi-
nimum distances specified in the DIN VDE 0101:... standard. Therefore, the PHV 1 P phase com-
parator cannot be used for all factory assembled, type-tested installations (in accordance with
DIN VDE 0670:...). The user of the PHV 1 P phase comparator or the operator of the switchgear
installation must contact the manufacturer of the factory assembled switchgear installation to
find out whether and where the PHV 1 P phase comparator may be used.
2.7
Dry-type or resin-encapsulated transformers are surrounded by a high electric field since they
are not metal-clad and therefore the indication of the PHV 1 P phase comparator may not be
clear any more. To avoid incorrect indication, phase comparison must be performed as far away
as possible from the transformer.
2.8
PHV 1 P phase comparators must not be used as voltage detectors or synchronisation aid. Mo-
reover, they must not be used for d.c. systems.
2.9
The PHV 1 P phase comparator is labelled "Also suitable for use in wet weather condi-
tions!" meaning that it may be used for indoor and outdoor locations in all weather conditions.
However, it must not be continuously energised for more than 1 minute in wet weather condi-
tions. Water drops may form on the membrane of the sound outlet which may negatively affect
the acoustic signal. Therefore, the device must be turned upside down prior to use to ensure that
the water runs off.
