PTO CLUTCH SERVICE
PTO Clutch Removal & Installation
1. Park the tractor on a level surface. Disengage the
PTO, turn off the engine and set the parking brake.
Remove the key.
2. Remove the mower deck from the tractor. See
MOWER REMOVAL & INSTALLATION, Section 6.
3. Elevate the front of the tractor (see ELEVATING
FRONT END FOR SAFE SERVICE, Section 6).
4. Unplug the wiring harness (A, Figure 1) from the PTO
clutch.
5. Remove the capscrew (D, Figure 2 & 3) and PTO
clutch (A).
Install in reverse order of removal. Torque the capscrew
(D) to 25 ft. lbs.
PTO Clutch Adjustment
The PTO clutch is not adjustable. If the clutch fails any
of the tests listed in this section, replace it.
Burnishing the PTO Clutch
This procedure should be used whenever a new PTO
clutch is installed. The purpose of burnishing the PTO
clutch is remove anti-corrosion coatings and break-in the
clutch under controlled conditions.
1. Select a safe area to operate the mower deck. With
the parking brake engaged, the PTO switch disen-
gaged, and an operator in the seat, start the rider
engine. Run the engine at full throttle.
2. Engage the PTO switch and run the deck for ten sec-
onds. Disengage the PTO switch and wait for the
mower drive belt to stop.
3. Repeat step 2 ten times, and then re-check the
mower blade stopping time. (Stopping time must be
five seconds or less.)
