42 Chapter 4: Hardware reference
The MPEG-4 encoder can control the bit rate, with a range from 192 Kbps to
4 Mbps. The MPEG-4 encoder can set the bit rate to be a constant value, to be
variable with a maximum rate, or to be variable with a minimum quality factor.
The MPEG-4 encoder supports up to 4 variable slices per frame, allowing the
encoder to switch the video streaming bit rate.
The MPEG-4 encoder can encode images of the incoming video stream into
groups (GOP) of up to 100 images. You can modify the length of the GOP.
The MPEG-4 encoder does not allow for manipulation of the data once it has
been compressed. After the data is encoded, the compressed stream is then passed
to the PCI-to-PCIe bridge.

PCIe interface

Matrox Morphis QxT allows the transfer of live video to Host memory, off-board
1
display memory
, or other PCIe devices across the PCIe bus. Compressed data
can be sent to Host memory.
Matrox Morphis QxT features an on-board 64-bit 133 MHz PCI-X bus master
to reduce CPU usage. There is also an on-board 32-bit 66 MHz PCI bus master
for the optional MPEG-4 encoder. Matrox Morphis QxT has a x4 PCIe bus
interface.
1. Direct copies are possible if the display memory is physically accessible from
Matrox Morphis QxT.
