11.0 Troubleshooting JWL-1640EVS Lathe

Symptom
Motor fails to develop
full power.
Motor or spindle stalls
or will not start.
Excessive vibration or
noises.
Tools tend to grab or
dig in.
Headstock moves
when applying
pressure with
Tailstock.
Tailstock moves when
applying pressure.
Digital readout does
not work.
* Warning: Some corrections may require a qualified electrician.
Possible Cause
Power line overloaded.
Undersized wires in supply system, or
extension cord is too long.
Low voltage.
Worn motor.
Excessive cut.
Worn or broken belt.
Improper cooling of motor.
Worn spindle bearings.
Worn motor.
Workpiece warped, out of round, has
major flaw, was improperly prepared for
turning.
Spindle rotation too fast.
Worn spindle bearings.
Drive belt misaligned or worn.
Motor mount bolts are loose.
Lathe on uneven surface.
Dull tools.
Tool rest set too low.
Tool rest set too far from workpiece.
Improper tool being used.
Locking handle not tight.
Excessive pressure being applied by
tailstock.
Cam lock nut needs adjusting.
Excessive pressure being applied by
tailstock. (Note: The screw action of the
tailstock
is
capable
excessive pressure to workpiece and
headstock. Apply only sufficient force by
tailstock to hold workpiece securely in
place. Excessive pressure can cause
damage to machine.)
Lathe bed and tailstock mating surfaces
are greasy or oily.
Digital sensor out of position.
Correction *
Correct overload condition.
Increase supply wire size.
Request voltage check from power
company
condition.
Replace motor.
Reduce depth of cut.
Replace belt.
Blow out sawdust from motor housing
fan.
Replace bearings.

Correct problem by planing or sawing
workpiece, or discard entirely and use
new workpiece.
Reduce speed.
Replace spindle bearings.
Align belt. Replace if worn.
Tighten bolts.
Adjust leveling feet.
Keep tools sharp.
Reposition tool rest height.
Reposition tool rest closer to workpiece.
Use correct tool for operation.
Tighten handle.
Slide headstock to left end, lock firmly,
then apply pressure to workpiece with
tailstock. Apply only sufficient force with
tailstock to hold workpiece securely in
place.
Tighten cam lock nut.
Slide tailstock to right side of lathe
against the stop. Move headstock into

applying

workpiece with tailstock.
Remove tailstock and clean surfaces
with a cleaner/degreaser. Re-apply light
coat of oil to lathe bed surface.
Open belt access and position sensor
so that it reads the bolts.
