Verifying the NMEA 0183 Message
Verify the message supplied by the NMEA 0183
talker by connecting its output to a laptop using
an RS422-to-USB adapter cable and viewing its
data stream using PuTTY, HyperTerminal, or
other terminal emulator. Follow the steps below
to verify the message.
NOTE: These example instructions assume you will
be using PuTTY to enter antenna commands.
1. Using an RS422-to-USB adapter, connect the
NMEA 0183 talker to the adapter's RS422
input. Then connect the adapter to your
laptop's USB port (see Figure 98).
2. Start PuTTY and specify your laptop's port,
connection type, and baud rate (see
Figure 99).
3. Configure options at the Serial configuration
menu as follows (see Figure 100):
• 4800 baud
• 8 data bits
• 1 stop bit
• no parity
• no flow control
4. Select Open to view the message data in a
command line window (see Figure 101).
