3. For spring-return actuators, remove the end
caps as described below. The actuator has two end
caps. Perform the same steps on both end caps. Re-
fer to figure 6 for part names referenced in removing
the end caps on spring-return actuators unless other-
wise indicated.
a. Remove the cap screw and sealing washer
(keys 21 and 22, figure 11) from the end cap.
WARNING
Avoid personal injury or property dam-
age from sudden release of precom-
pressed spring force. The retractor rods
and nuts are manufactured to required
specifications in order to provide the
correct thread engagement in the retrac-
tor spring seats and to have the proper
tensile strength when applying spring
compression to the springs for end cap
removal.
The threads on the retractor rods and
nuts and the threads in the retractor
spring seats are metric threads. Using
any retractor rods, washers, and nuts
except those supplied in the appropriate
retractor rod kit specifically for the ac-
tuator model number could result in per-
sonal injury or property damage.

b. Use the retractor rod, washer, and nuts from the
retractor rod kit. (Note: Retractor rod kits are avail-
able. Please refer to the Parts Kits section at the
end of this manual. If necessary, make a retractor
rod by using the dimensions shown in figure 7.)
Make certain that the washer and nuts are installed
on the retractor rod as shown in figure 7. Insert the
retractor rod through the hole in the end cap.
c. Thread the retractor rod into the retractor spring
seat until travel is stopped. This indicates that the
retractor rod has contacted the piston.
d. Thread the nut on the retractor rod, located
closest to the end cap, down the rod until the wash-
er contacts the end cap. Using a wrench, screw
this nut clockwise two complete turns in order to
draw the retractor spring seat away from the piston
head and release the spring compression on the
piston.
Avoid personal injury or property dam-
age from sudden release of precom-
pressed spring force. Make certain that
spring compression is held by the re-
tractor rod and the retractor spring seat
(key 8) and is removed from the top of
the piston (key 3) before removing the
safety key (key 5).
e. Rotate the end cap to make certain the springs
are retracted. If the end cap cannot be rotated free-
