e. Apply appropriate amount of thermal grease on the heat-sink-and-fan assembly if necessary.
Position the microprocessor retainer with the microprocessor on the new heat-sink-and-fan
assembly. Insert two retaining clips of the retainer into the corresponding holes in the heat-sink-and-
fan assembly

the retainer with the microprocessor is securely seated on the heat-sink-and-fan assembly.

f. When installing the microprocessor 1 on the heat-sink-and-fan assembly 1, the number 1 should be
visible if correctly installed. When installing the microprocessor 2 on the heat-sink-and-fan assembly
2, the number 2 should be visible if correctly installed.
7. Reinstall the heat-sink-and-fan assembly. See "Heat-sink-and-fan assembly" on page 203.
8. If you are instructed to return the old microprocessor, follow all packaging instructions and use any
packaging materials that are supplied to you for shipping.

CAUTION:
Avoid contact with hot components inside the computer. During operation, some components
become hot enough to burn the skin. Before you open the computer cover, turn off the computer,
disconnect power, and wait approximately 10 minutes for the components to cool.
Note: Each computer has a unique Vital Product Data (VPD) code stored in the nonvolatile memory on the
system board. After you replace the system board, the VPD must be updated. To update the VPD, see
"Updating and recovering the BIOS" on page 72.
