When the vehicle is stationary, depress the

Start the engine (

Depress the brake pedal and push the E-

SELECT lever forwards past the first point of
resistance.
Shifting directly from j to h:
Start the engine (
page 103).

SELECT lever backwards past the first point of
resistance.
To release park position j:
depress the brake pedal and

push the E-SELECT lever forwards or back to
R
the first point of resistance

The transmission shifts to neutral i.

Park position j is engaged automatically in the
following circumstances:
if you switch off the engine using the Start/
R
Stop button and open the driver's or front-
passenger door.
if you remove the Smart ey from the ignition
R
lock.
if you open the driver's door while traveling at
R
low speeds in transmission position h or k.
Under certain conditions, the automatic trans-
mission shifts automatically to transmission
position j if the HOLD function or Distance
Pilot DISTRONIC is activated. Observe the infor-
mation on the HOLD function (

Start the engine (

When the vehicle is stationary, depress the

Push the E-SELECT lever forwards past the

first point of resistance.
Shiftin to neutral N
Start the engine (

brake pedal.
Push the E-SELECT lever forwards or back to

the first point of resistance.
If you move the E-SELECT lever to i before
switching off the engine, the transmission
remains in i for approximately 30 minutes. If
you open the driver's or front-passenger door
during this time, the transmission shifts auto-
matically to j.
The transmission remains in i if:
the Smart ey is in the ignition lock and
R
you use the E‑SELECT lever to shift the trans-
R
mission to i before switching the engine off
This still applies if you open the driver's or front-
passenger door.
