Chapter 18: Installing and Managing Third-Party Applications
Upgrading the BlackBerry Storm OS
The OS used by Storm has gone through a few revisions. The BlackBerry OS
update comes from BlackBerry Handheld Software, which is available from
three sources:
✓ Your network service provider
✓ The Research In Motion Web site
✓ Your BlackBerry system administrator
Because the handheld software might differ from provider to provider, we rec-
ommend getting it from the service provider's Web site. RIM has a download
site for different service providers at
http://na.blackberry.com/eng/support/downloads/download_sites.jsp
In this section, we assume that the latest BlackBerry Handheld Software for
Storm is already installed on your PC. For help with installing BlackBerry
Handheld Software, refer to the instructions that come with it.
If you plan to upgrade your BlackBerry OS, and you've installed many third-
party applications, check whether those applications support the new OS revi-
sion. Third-party applications work as is most of the time, but there is always
a possibility of losing third-party application data.
You may think that the latest operating system, or firmware, for your device
is what is approved by your carrier and available via the blackberry.com
Web site. However, often a newer version is "unofficially" available. Research
In Motion continuously works on the operating system for each device model
they sell, turning out a new build each week. Occasionally, these internal
builds — which are stepping stones along the way to the next official release
and may not see carrier approval — leak onto the Internet. Typically, the
newer the firmware version, the better, and a cult following of BlackBerry
owners feverishly anticipate the next leaked build. To stay on top of the
