Read and Retain These Instructions - All the safety and operating instructions should be read before the unit is operated and should be retained for future reference.

    • This equipment contains no user-serviceable parts. • This unit contains a lithium battery whose expected life is in excess of five years. If the MDAe loses its settings each time it is switched off then the battery needs replacing. In this instance, return the MDAe to Baxall Limited and we will replace the battery.

    Installation and Operation Manual INTRODUCTION The MDAe is a rack mountable Ethernet-ready high capacity digital video storage system. From 1 to 8 hard drives can be installed in each MDAe chassis. The unit may be purchased with or without hard drives installed.

    Installation and Operation Manual MDAe High Capacity Digital Video Storage System CONNECTIONS 10/100 ETHERNET PORT The Ethernet port is used to connect the MDAe to the network. Wire Type: Cat 5 Connector Type: RJ45 Cable Required: Ethernet SCSI PORTS 1 AND 2 Connect a SCSI device to one of the two SCSI ports.

    100: LED ON = 100 Mbps bandwidth. LED OFF = 10Mbps. LCD DISPLAY Once the unit has been powered-up, the LCD display will indicate the total disk capacity of the MDAe. The LCD display will also provide visual feedback for the menu settings.

    Do not allow any metal object to contact the motherboard. Do not allow lose screws to become lost inside the MDAe chassis. Wear an Electrostatic Discharge protection device whenever work is being performed inside the unit.

    CONFIGURING THE DISK DRIVES The MDAe can accept up to eight disk drives. The drives are connected either individually or in pairs to each of the four IDE connector cables. When a pair of drives is connected to a single IDE cable, one drive must be configured as a Master and the other as a Slave.

    Orient the disk drive so that the IDE power connector is near the bottom of the MDAe chassis and facing the motherboard. Populate the MDAe unit starting from the left hand side. Fasten the drive(s) in place using the supplied screws. Fasten each drive using two screws through the bottom of the MDAe chassis, and one screw through the drive support bracket.

    MDAe High Capacity Digital Video Storage System Installation and Operation Manual CONNECTING THE DISK DRIVE POWER SUPPLIES Connect each installed hard drive to the power supply connectors with the power supply connector cables supplied. When connecting 1 to 4 disk drives, use the power connectors directly from the motherboard (using the power connector cables provided).

    CONNECTING THE SCSI CABLE Connect a SCSI device to one of the two SCSI ports on the MDAe using the supplied SCSI cable. Using the block of dip switches (SW1) on the rear panel, set SCSI Termination (dip switch 1) to ON, and SCSI Power (dip switch 2) to ON. Select SCSI as the type of Bus in the Bus Select option of the Setup menu.

    Notes: The Setup menu will automatically exit after 30 seconds of inactivity. Access to the Setup menu is only available when the MDAe is offline, i.e. the MDAe is not presently archiving or connected via Ethernet. The MDAe will automatically reboot if any of the Bus or Network parameters are changed.

    Installation and Operation Manual MDAe High Capacity Digital Video Storage System SETUP MENU IP ADDRESS Enter the assigned IP Address by using the left/right arrow keys to select the required field. Then, use the up/down arrow keys to change the value of the selected field. Obtain the required information from your network administrator.
  • Page 16 Disks with read/write errors should be replaced. • Disks with T status may be recovered, but the MDAe will attempt to start recording to this disk. A recovery should not be attempted until the preceding disk is filled up. Contact Technical Support for information on replacing and recovering problem hard disks.
