WLAN
Wireless local area networks (WLANs) allow the MC40 to communicate wirelessly inside a building. Before using
the MC40 on a WLAN, the facility must be set up with the required hardware to run the WLAN (sometimes known as
infrastructure). The infrastructure and the MC40 must both be properly configured to enable this communication.
Refer to the documentation provided with the infrastructure (access points (APs), access ports, switches, Radius
servers, etc.) for instructions on how to set up the infrastructure.
Once the infrastructure is set up to enforce the chosen WLAN security scheme, use the Wireless & networks settings
to configure the MC40 to match the security scheme.
The MC40 with KitKat supports Zebra Pan-Enterprise features. These features are available on the Zebra wireless
LAN running WiNG 5.8 (and above) infrastructure. These features include:
Coverage Hole Detection (CHD) - The MC40 KitKat device include enhancements to the IEEE 802.11k
standard. These improvements will report gaps in signal coverage to the Zebra wireless LAN infrastructure.
Network administrators can report and mitigate coverage gaps present in the network for greater reliability and
signal integrity.
Aggregated Fast Transition (FT) - Aggregated FT improves on IEEE 802.11r, Over-the-DS fast roaming. In
conjunction with Zebra wireless LAN infrastructure, MC40 KitKat will achieve more reliable and consistent fast
roaming.
Scan Assist - MC40 KitKat monitors neighbor access points nd other information from the Zebra wireless LAN
infrastructure without doing scans. Using this Scan Assist feature, the MC40 KitKat improves roaming.
Note: Turn off Wi-Fi when not using it, to extend the life of the battery.
The Status bar displays icons that indicate Wi-Fi network availability and Wi-Fi status. See
more information.

Scan and Connect to a Wi-Fi Network

To set up WLAN on the device:
Note: When the MC40 is in Airplane Mode, the WLAN radio turns off. When in Airplane Mode, the user
can turn the WLAN radio back on if desired.
Procedure:
1
Touch
or
.
2 If Wi-Fi is off, slide the Wi-Fi switch to the On position.
3 Touch Wi-Fi. The MC40 searches for WLANs in the area and lists them.
