Flushing power unit

Perform this procedure right after operation for the most
thorough flushing.
ECM01531
Do not perform this procedure while the engine is run-
ning. The water pump may be damaged and severe
damage from overheating can result.
1.
After shutting off the engine, unscrew the garden hose
connector from the fitting on the bottom cowling.

2.
Screw the garden hose adapter onto a garden hose,
which is connected to a fresh water supply, and then
connect it to the garden hose connector.
3.
With the engine off, turn on the water tap and let the wa-
ter flush through the cooling passages for about 15 min-
utes. Turn off the water and disconnect the garden
hose adapter from the garden hose connector.
4.
Reinstall the garden hose connector onto the fitting on
the bottom cowling. Tighten the connector securely.

loose on the bottom cowling fitting or let the hose
hang free during normal operation. Water will leak
out of the connector instead of cooling the engine,
which can cause serious overheating. Be sure the
connector is tightened securely on the fitting after
flushing the engine.

TIP:
When flushing the engine with the boat in the water, tilting
up the outboard motor until it is completely out of the wa-
ter will achieve better results.
For cooling system flushing instructions, see page 61.

Checking painted surface of outboard motor

Check the outboard motor for scratches, nicks, or flaking
paint. Areas with damaged paint are more likely to corrode.
If necessary, clean and paint the areas. Touch-up paint is
available from your Yamaha dealer.

Periodic maintenance

EWM01872
These procedures require mechanical skills, tools, and
supplies. If you do not have the proper skills, tools, or
supplies to perform a maintenance procedure, have a
Yamaha dealer or other qualified mechanic do the work.
The procedures involve disassembling the motor and
exposing dangerous parts. To reduce the risk of injury
from moving, hot, or electrical parts:
Turn off the engine and keep the key(s) and engine
shut-off cord (lanyard) with you when you perform
maintenance unless otherwise specified.
The power trim and tilt switches operate even when
the ignition key is off. Keep people away from the
switches whenever working around the motor. When
the motor is tilted, keep away from the area under it
or between it and the clamp bracket. Be sure no one
is in this area before operating the power trim and tilt
mechanism.
Allow the engine to cool before handling hot parts or
fluids.
Always completely reassemble the motor before op-
eration.
Maintenance, replacement, or repair of the emission
control devices and systems may be performed by any
marine engine repair establishment or individual. All
warranty repairs, however, including those to the emis-
sion control system, must be performed by an autho-
rized Yamaha marine dealership.
A service manual is available for purchase through your
Yamaha dealer for owners who have the mechanical skills,
tools, and other equipment necessary to perform mainte-
nance not covered by this owner's manual.

Replacement parts

If replacement parts are necessary, use only genuine
Yamaha parts or parts of equivalent design and quality. Any
part of inferior quality may malfunction, and the resulting
loss of control could endanger the operator and passen-
Maintenance
