You should have a plan of escape for your family and a designated meeting spot
outside the home in the event of fire. Smoke and heat can spread quickly, so develop
your own plan and practice it.
• Draw a floor plan of your house. Mark two exits from each bedroom, since most
fires occur at night while people are sleeping.
• Make sure all planned exits are usable. Keep an escape ladder near a window with
a long drop to the ground. Make sure any windows used as exits are easy to open
without restrictions.
• Post a copy of your escape plan in each room. Make sure the escape plan includes
a designated meeting spot outside the house.
• Practice the escape plan with your family.
• Keep bedroom doors closed while the family sleeps to prevent smoke from
spreading and entering other rooms.
• Place your hand against the bedroom door before opening. If the door is hot, use
the alternate exit. If cool, open cautiously. If either smoke or heat are apparent,
close the door and use the alternate exit.
• If smoke is present, crawl low to the ground. Escape as quickly as possible.
• Once outside, move to the designated meeting spot. Make sure no one re-enters
the home.
• Call 911 from a neighbor's phone for backup response.
Anytime an alarm siren sounds, you can silence the audible tone by entering your
passcode. Once you enter your passcode, the signal continues to be transmitted to
the Customer Service Center, but the siren is now silent.
