Safetytips to follow while microwaving
1. Cooking utensils may become hot because

covering the top and handlesof the utensil.
Pot holders may be needed to handle the
utensil.
2. Sometimes, the oven shelf can become too
h@ to touch. Be careful touching the shelf
during and after cooking.
3. Don't heat unopened food containers in
the oven. Pressurebuildingup can cause the
containerto burst, resultingin injury.
4. Don't defrost frozen liquids—especially
carbonatedones—in the oven. Even if the
container is opened, pressurecan build up.

Don't overcook food excessively.

6. If food should ever ignite: Keep the oven
door closed. Turn off the power immediately:
turn timer to OFF or disconnectpower cord
or shut off power at the fuse circuit breaker
panel.

oven when not using it to cook with. If you
leave the sensorinside the oven withoutin-
sertingit in food or liquid,and turnon micro-

Boiling eggs (in or out of shell) is not rec-
oinmended for microwave cooking. Pressure
can build up inside egg yolk and may cause
it to burst, resultingin injury.
10. Do not pop popcorn in your microwave
oven urdessin a special microwavepopcorn
accessory or unless you use popcorn in a
package labeled for microwave ovens. Be-
cause of the heat generated without these
precautions, the container could catch fire.
11. Use metal only as directed in cookbook.
Metal stripsas usedon meatroastsare help-
ful in cooking food when used as directed.
Metal trays may be used for TV dinners.

However,whenusingmetalin themicrowave
oven, keep metal at least 1-inch away from
sides of microwave oven.
12. Do not operate the oven while empty to
avoid damage to the oven and the danger of
fire. If by accidenttheovenshouldrunempty
a minuteor two, no harm is done. However,
try to avoid operatingthe oven empty at all
times-it saves energy and prolongs life of
theoven.
13. Foods with unbroken outer "skin" such
as potatoes,hot dogs or sausages,tomatoes,
apples,chicken livers and other giblets,and
eggs (see above) should be pierced to allow
steam to escape during cooking.
14. "BoilableY' cooking pouches and tightly
closed plastic bags or plastic wrap tightly
coveringcontainersshouldbe slit, prickedor
vented as otherwise directed in Cookbook.
If they are not, plastic could burstduringor
immediately after cooking resulting in in-
jury. Also, plastic storagecontainersshould
be at least partiallyuncoveredbecausethey
form such a tight seal.
15. Do not use your microwave oven to dry
newspaper. If overheated,it can catch fire.
16. Plastic utensils—Plastic
utensils de-
signedfor microwavecookingarevery useful,
butshouldbe usedcarefully.Evenmicrowave
plasticmay not be as tolerantof overcooking
conditionsas are glass or ceramic materials
and may soften or char if subjectedto short
periodsof overcooking.In longerexposures to
overcooking,the food and utensils could ig-
nite. For these reasons: 1) Use microwave
plastics only "and use them" in strict com-
pliance with the utensil manufacturer'srec-
ommendations. 2) Do not subject empty
utensils to microwaving.3) Do not permit
childrento use plastic utensilswithoutcom-
plete supervision.
