Condenser is not installed properly.
Lamp is not installed properly.

Dirt or dust on lens (condenser,
objective, eyepiece).
Specimen holder on the stage is in
optical path.
Phase slider (or NAMC slider) is in
midway position.
Provided diffuser is not inserted.

Filter is not inserted properly.
Unwanted filter is in the optical path.
Optical path changeover knob position is
wrong.

Image dark on one side. (One side of the viewfield
(up, down, right, or left) is not focused.)

Revolving nosepiece is not in click-stop
position.
Image shifts during focus. (Becomes asymmetrically
