    1. Install Vehicle Mounting Bracket (and keyboard mounting bracket) on vehicle. 2. Secure VX8 in Mounting Bracket Assembly. 3. Connect power cable to the VX8.     The keyboard is used to manually input data that is not collected otherwise. Almost any function that a full sized computer keyboard can provide is duplicated on the LXE VMT keyboard but it may take a few more keystrokes to accomplish a keyed task.

    The optional software keyboard provides a virtual keyboard on the touchscreen. The soft keyboard is orderable in several configurations.     Hardware Configuration Video Subsystem The LXE VX8 video subsystem consists of a color TFT display. The resolution of this display is 800 by 600 pixels (SVGA). The AGP video controller uses a portion of the system memory. The amount of system memory assigned to the integrated graphics controller may be set in the BIOS.

    Power Button The power (on/off) button is a push button switch located on the front of the VX8. The switch is a momentary switch. If the VX8 is Off, pressing the power switch turns the VX8 On. If the VX8 is On, Windows determines the results of a power button press.

    The Keyboards PS/2 Keyboard/Mouse A standard PS/2 keyboard and mouse can be attached to the VX8 using the two PS/2 connectors, one labeled “Keyboard” and one labeled “Mouse”. Please refer to documentation provided with the PS/2 keyboard and mouse for more information on their operation.

    Always use the point of the stylus for tapping or making strokes on the display. Never use an actual pen, pencil or sharp object to write on the touch screen. An extra or replacement stylus may be ordered from LXE. See the “Accessories” section for the stylus part number.

    An Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) is built into the VX8 to provide power for short periods of time when vehicle power is unavailable (such as when vehicle batteries are swapped). The UPS, when enabled, can be used to power the VX8 for a specified period of time before shutdown.

    Power Supply CMOS Battery The LXE VX8 has a permanent Lithium battery installed to maintain time, date and CMOS setup information. The lithium battery is not user serviceable and should last five years with normal use before it requires replacement.

    Chapter 3 System Configuration Introduction Like any personal computer, there are many aspects to the setup and configuration of the VX8. Much of the setup and configuration of the VX8 is dependent upon the optional features (both hardware and software) installed on the computer. Since the VX8 uses the Microsoft Windows Plug and Play operating system, much of the hardware setup is automatic.

    BIOS Setup Accessing the BIOS Setup When you turn the VX8 on, the unit starts to boot. Watch the bootup sequence and when the following is displayed: Press F2 to Enter Setup Press the [F2] key. Note: The “Press F2 to Enter Setup” message may be disabled in the BIOS. The F2 key still has the same function when the display of the message is disabled.

    Legacy Diskette (A and B) This option is used to indicate if a floppy disk drive is attached to the VX8. The VX8 does not have a provision for a standard floppy drive; however, a USB floppy may be attached to the USB interface cable.

    Please refer to the instructions for configuring the 802.11 b/g or 802.11 a/b/g radio in Chapter 4, “Wireless Network Configuration”. Ethernet Connector When the VX8 is networked using the Ethernet connector, the VX8’s networking options are set via the Microsoft Windows Control Panel. The same networking configuration options are available as in a standard PC.

    Main Tab The main tab shows the embedded controller’s firmware version and build date as well as the VX8 computer manager application version and build date. The LXE logo is a clickable hyper link. There are no user configurable options on this tab.

    Wedge Wedge The VX8 computer contains a software keyboard wedge that allows scanner input to be treated as keyboard input by applications. Configuration To configure the wedge, select Start | All Programs | FreeFloat WLinq | WLinq. Click on the Settings button to configure WLinq. Make sure the Communication tab is selected.

  • Page 76: Loading An Operating System On The Vx8

    The ‘Recovery Solution 2’, hereafter known as RS2, is a method to restore the software on your VX8 to the same state it had when it was shipped from the factory. When RS2 is used on your VX8, it destroys any information on your hard disk so please make sure that any information on the hard disk that needs to be preserved is backed up before using RS2.

    If this is not the case please modify the boot order in the BIOS of your VX8. 4. When the VX8 boots from the USB DVD player the BIOS asks you to press a key in order to continue to boot from the RS2 media. Please press a key when prompted to boot from the RS2.
