4.7 Steering
For safety reasons,
perform
maintenance
jobs at regular interval
s.
This adjustment requi
res special skills
and
should
only be performed
al a
MERCEDES-BENZ
service
station.
4.7.1 Checking the
steering
linkage
Drag link ends
and
tie
rod
ends must be
periodically checked for excessive
piny or
looseness. Lift front
axle.
The balls must
rest
in
their
sockets without
play Socket
4.7.2 Checking steering free play
Manual steering
Should
the
re be any
free
play
in the steer
ing,
have
the steering system
adjusted at a
MERCEDES-BENZ
service station
imme
diately.
Power
steering
Play
in
the
steering should only be
checked
when
the
engine
is
running
.
Power
steering
In case
of emergency,
i.e.
when the
hy-
draulic
syste
m fails, the
vehicle can con-
tinue
to be steered with
increased
effort
because
the
mechanica
l
power
transmis
-
sion is
retained.
caps and seals
must
be
tight and
un-
damaged.
Check all
bolts and
nuts
for
tight
seati ng.
When
the engine is not running (hydrau
lic
sys tem
of the steering assembly is
inoper
-
ative),
the
play verified would be
inaccu-
rate (excessive).
The
wheels
must
start moving when
th
e
steering wheel
is
turned approx. 30 mm
(1.2 in).
If
they do not move
,
have
steering
gear
and
linkage
inspected
by
a
MERCEDES-BENZ service station.
