1. Never place
any
part o
f your
body where
a movin
g
or
fallin g
engine
may trap.
CUI
or crush you.
2. If
y
ou mu
st
push
the engine during
removal,
use a
boa
rd
or similar tool to keep your hands
out of
danger.
3.
Make
sure
the
hoist
is designed
to
lin
engines
and has
eno
ugh
load
capacity
for your engine.
4.
Make
sure
the hoist is sec
urely
attached to safe lifting
points
on
the engine.
5.
The
engine
should not
be
diffi
cult
to lift with a proper
hoist. If it
is.
stop
lifting. lower
the
eng ine back
onto
its
mounts and
make sure
the
eng ine
has
been
completely
separated
from the vessel .

cannot address
all engine in-
stallations.
refer to the following
general instructions
when remo
ving
the
engine.
1.
Disco
nnect
the negat ive
bat
tery
cable.
2.
C
lose
the seacock and
drain
the coo ling system as de-
scribed
in
Chapter
Four.
3.
Disconnect
the intake
water
hose from the
seawater
cooling
pump
.

4. C
lose
the
fue l shuto ff valve and
disconnect
the fuel
line and the fuel return
line.
5.
Disconnect the
remote
contro
l
cab
les.
6. Disconnect
the
elec
trica
l
wiring harne
ss
connectors.
7.
Disconnect
the
electrical
wires
from the electric starter
motor
and
so
leno id
that
will interfere with
engine re-
moval.
8.
Detach
the ex
haust system.
9.
Detach
the
dri
veshaft from
the
transm ission o
utput
5
flange.
10. Remove
the engine
retaining bo
lts.

. Remove the engi
ne and
trans
miss
ion.
12.
Rem ove the
tran
smission from
the engine
as de-
scribed in Chapter
Ten.
13.
Eng ine
installation is the revers e ofrem oval,
plus
the
follow
ing:
a
.
Tighten the
engine
mounting
bolts
sec
urely.
b. Sec
urely
tighten the output flange-to-driveshaft
bolts.
e.
Bleed
the fuel
sys
tem at the fue
l
filter as
described
under Fuel Filter
in
Chapter
Th
ree.

remove the
valve
cover,
proceed as follows:
I. Make sure
the
decompression lever is in the
O
FF posi-
tion .
2.
Unsc
rew
the retaining
nut (F igu re
6).
3.
Remove the valve cover.
4. Rem ove the gasket.
5.
C
lean
the gaske
t
surfaces on the va
lve
cover and cylin-
der head
.
6.
Reverse the
removal steps to insta ll the valve
cover.

A
reed-type breather is located
in the
valve cover. Refer
to Chapter Three
for
a description o
f breather
operation .
To
service the
reed portion
of
the
brea
ther, remove the
breath er cover
(F
igure
7).
Th

reed (F

should
lie
flat.
Replace the reed
if it
is
split,
cracked or otherwise
da
maged
.
Check
the oil
return hole (F
igure
9)
inside
the
breather
chambe r in
the va
lve
cover.
If the
hole is
obstructed. re-
mo ve
the valve
co
ver and
clean
out
the
hole
.
