motor mounting
bolts.
Pull the
sta
rter motor
away fro
m
the flywheel and remove
it
from
the engine.

Installation is the reverse of removal. Tighten mount-
ing
bolts to
torque
specified in
Tab
le
2.
Solenoid

To remove
the solenoid
it
is
necessary to partially
d
isas-
semble the
starter.
Note
that
the
starter
used
on series
10 M, l
GM IO, 2GM
.

equipped with an antitorq uc spring that
stabilizes
the
actuating yoke.

Remove the
starter
as
previously
described.
2. Disconnect
the
soleno
id
term
inal
wires
(Figu re
15).
3. Remo ve
the screws
securing
the
solenoid to the starter.
The
solenoid will
be
loose
but
still
attached to the
actua t-
ing yo
ke in the
starter. It is necessary to
partially
disas-
semble
the sta
rter
to rem ove
the
so
leno
id and yoke.

NOTE
Do not allow the armature to moveforward
because
the commutator
may
slide out ofthe
brushes,
which will require disassembly of
the rear
of
the starte r to reins

brushes.

the drive
end cover

from
the
frame
(
15 or
22) so the
arm
ature
shaft
wit
hdraws
from the drive end
hou
sing, but stays
in
position in
the
frame .

while noting
the
following:
a. Position
the antito rque spring on
the
sole noid
plunger
so
the
spring ends fit in the
holes
in the sole-
no
id (f ig ure
18).
b.
Posit
ion the
yok
e
in the
solenoid p
lunger so
the
notch on the yoke
fits against
the
closed
end of the
anti-torque
spring as shown in
Figure
18.
c. Make
sure
the open end of the
yoke
properly en-
gages the cars
on
the
overrunning clutch
body
(Fig-
ure
19).
8B. To install
the
soleno id on mod

equip
ped
with
an antitorq uc spring,
reverse the disassembl y

edure
while
noting the
follo
wing:
a. Make
sure
that the
pad
s
on
the
open end of
the yo
ke
properly fit
between the
flanges
on the overrunning
clutch
body.

Disconnect
the
positive
lead from the solenoid
.
2.
Remove
the
cover
(26,

gure 16)
on
the
end
cap.
3. Detach the
E-ring (25,
Figur e 16) and remove
the
washers from
the
arma
ture
shaft.
4.
Remove the
brush holder
retaining screws
(30,
Figure
16).
5.
Remove
the two throughbo
lts
(29.
Figure
16).
6.
Separate
the end
cover
(2
1,
Figure
16)
from
the starter.
7.
Note the
position of
the brushes in the
brush
holder.
Use a
suitab le
tool to pu
ll
back
and
hold
the
brush retai n-
ing
clip. then remove
the
brush.

figure
20
,
typical.
Repeat
this step
to remove the rema
ining
brus
hes.
8.
Remove the brush holder
from
the arm
ature shaft
.
9. Use an ohmmeter or
self-powered test lamp
to check
for continuity
between the
insu
lated brush
holder
and
the
base of the
brush
holder assembl y. See
fi
gure
21.
If there
is
continuity.
rep
lace
the
brush holder.
10. Inspect
brush
and brush spring
condition.
Measure
brush
length. Repla ce
all
brushes if any
are oi
l-soaked or
worn to
12
mm
(0.47
in.)
or
less in
length.
Repla
ce any
broken
or
distorte
d
brush
springs .
