Position
the piston so the numbered
side
of the rod
(F
igure
41) is toward the camshaft side of the
engine.
In-
sert the
piston/connecting
rod assembly into the cylinder
(Figu re
44).
Lightly
tap on
the
piston
crown with a
wooden hammer
handle
to insert the
piston
.
Make sure the
rod does not bang
against
the
cranks haft
.
6. Clean the
connecting
rod bearings
carefully, includi ng
the
back
sides.
Coat the crankp
in journa l
and
bearings
with clean engine
oil. P
lace
the
bearings
in the
connecting
rod and
cap.
7.
Pull the connect
ing
rod and bearing into
position
against the cran
kpin.
Lightly lubr
icate
the connecting rod
bolt
threads with eng
ine
oil.
8. Install the connecting rod cap. Make sure the rod and
cap are
p
roperly
aligned.
Install the
cap
bolts finger-t
ight.
9. Tighten the cap reta
ining
bolt s to
speci fication
(Ta
ble
4).

Check the
connec ting
rod side clearance as described
under Piston/Connecting Rod Re
moval
in this chapter.

The
timing
gearcase covers the
camshaft
and cran
kshaft
gears and the
oil
pump
(Figure
45). The
tim
ing gearcase
also conta
ins
the
govern or mechanism and
serves as the
mounting location for
the
fue
l
injection pump.
A
ball
bearing in the timing gearc
ase
supp
orts the
outer end
of
the
crankshaft.
To
remove
and reinst
all the timing
gcarcasc.
proceed
as
follows:
