At 80° F
to the alternator mounting bracket or an-
other good engine ground and not the bat-
tery itself.
2. Check that all jumper cables are out ofthe way ofmov-
ing parts on both engines.
3. Start the engine with the good battery and run at a mod-
erate speed.
4. Start the engine with the discharged battery. Once it
starts, run it at a moderate speed.
CAUTION
Racing the engine may damage the electri-
cal system.
5. Remove the jumper cables in the exact reverse order
shown in Figure 11. Begin at point 4, then disconnect at
points 3, 2 and 1.
Battery Cables
Poor terminal connections will cause excessive resis-
tance. Defective cable insulation can cause partial short
circuits. Both conditions may result in an abnormal volt-
age drop in the starter motor cable. When this happens,
the resulting hard-start condition will place further strain

Make connections in numerical order
(disconnect in reverse order 4-3-2-1)
Discharged battery

nections periodically.
ELECTRICAL PROTECTION
Some electrical systems are equipped with a battery
cutoff switch connected between the positive terminal of
the battery and the starter solenoid. The switch provides a
means to cut off all circuits from the battery in case of fire
