photoconductor. An element of the print unit that works
similarly to film in a camera. As the photoconductor drum
rotates, it uses positive and negative charges to alternately
attract the toner necessary to define the image produced
by the LEDs and transfer the image to the page.
pitch. A unit of measure that designates the number of
characters that can be printed in 1 horizontal inch. For
example, a 10-pitch font prints 10 characters per inch (cpi).
point. A unit of measure that designates the height of a
printed character (1 point = 1/72 in.).
point size. The height of the characters in a font.
portrait orientation. Printed page orientation in which the
print runs along the short edge of the paper.
power saver. A printer setting that reduces power usage
when the printer is idle. When the message is
Power Saver
displayed, the printer is ready to receive print jobs.
ppm. See pages per minute.
primary color. Colors that, when combined, produce
white in an additive color system and black in a
subtractive color system. Red, green, and blue (RGB) are
the additive primaries. Cyan, magenta, and yellow (CMY)
are the subtractive primaries.
print material. See media.
print server. See external network adapter.
print unit. The assembled unit inside the printer that
includes the toner cartridge and developer and the
photoconductor.
printer driver. A program that translates the language of
a software application to the language of the printer so the
two can communicate data.
printer language. A set of defined commands (such as
PCL or PostScript) to which the printer responds.
